Eliminate Nicotine Stains

Get rid of nicotine stains on walls and ceilings for a fresher, cleaner appearance.


Nicotine from cigarette smoking can cause unsightly stains on surfaces within your home, as well as on your teeth and fingertips. Homes with nicotine stains have a yellowish film on walls and ceilings, and they tend to smell stale. Teeth and fingertips that become stained with nicotine look yellowed and dingy. These simple tips will help get rid of nicotine stains in your home and on your person.

Get Rid of Nicotine Stains


1. Mix a solution of one part ammonia to three parts hot water in a plastic bucket or basin. Wearing rubber gloves, rinse a sponge or rags in the solution and scrub walls or ceilings that have become yellowed and smelly from nicotine. Rinse and repeat the process as necessary.


2. Spray a bathroom cleaner like Scrubbing Bubbles on vinyl wallpaper or plastic surfaces inside your home that have become stained with nicotine. Allow the formula to stand for a minute or two and wipe away with a damp sponge or cleaning rags.


3. Set out opened containers of baking soda in rooms that still have the lingering smell of nicotine, or the odor of the ammonia or bathroom cleaner. The baking soda will help absorb the odors.


4. Make a paste of baking soda and a few drops of water. Put this on your toothbrush and brush your teeth twice daily with this paste to help remove nicotine stains from your teeth. Although the paste will taste salty, it will help remove the stains and isn't nearly as abrasive as some toothpastes on the market that are specifically for cigarette smokers.


5. Pour hydrogen peroxide into a basin or bathroom sink, creating a formula of one part peroxide to one part warm water. Soak fingertips that have become stained with nicotine in the solution for five minutes. Repeated treatments will remove nicotine stains from fingertips. Be sure to use ample hand lotion after these treatments as the peroxide may cause the fingers to become exceedingly dry.
