If you live in an area where cold weather prevails, you will need a means of draining all the water out of the plumbing system. Stop and waste ball valves look and perform like regular ball valves but have one added benefit. They have a drain port which allows you to drain water downstream of the valve. Use stop and waste valves on sprinkler systems, outdoor spigots, and other piping that you want to be able to drain quickly.
Instructions
1. Wrap plumber's tape around the threads to which you will attach the valve, going in a clockwise manner until the tape is two to three layers thick.
2. Position the stop and waste ball valve so that the drain port is on the downstream side of the piping.
3. Screw the stop and waste ball valve onto the pipe threads. Turn the valve clockwise to tighten until you can no longer turn it with your hands. Then fit a pipe wrench onto the valve and tighten by turning clockwise until the valve is snug.
4. Arrange for a plumber to help you connect the rest of the piping in the plumbing system.
