Nicotine Options

Cigarettes and other tobacco products are the main source of nicotine addiction.

Nicotine is the addictive substance found in cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco and all tobacco products. Nicotine addiction is bad for your health because it promotes the smoking of tobacco products, which increase the risk of heart disease, cancer, emphysema and hardening arteries. Nicotine affects receptors in the brain that release dopamine, which triggers sensations of pleasure, enjoyment and reinforcement. Those who are addicted to nicotine must find alternative methods of getting nicotine in their body. Eventually, this will lead to stopping the nicotine dependency.

Nicotine Replacement Therap

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) includes over-the-counter gums and patches that provide small doses of nicotine to the user via oral or topical use. Users of NRT begin at a certain level of nicotine intake and gradually move down to smaller doses of nicotine until they are no longer addicted to the chemical. The objective is to stop the physical smoking addiction and wean the body off the physiological nicotine addiction. Nasal spray and inhaler NRTs are available by a doctor's prescription.


Chantix is a prescription drug used to help nicotine addicts quit their addiction. It is a pill that is taken orally once a day. It is a non-nicotine product that targets the nicotine receptors in the brain, attaches to the receptors and blocks nicotine from reaching them. Chantix activates the nicotine receptors and still causes dopamine to be released, but not as much as nicotine. The nicotine addict no longer craves the nicotine because Chantix, instead of nicotine, stimulates the receptors in the brain.


Acupuncture is an alternative medicine that involves poking or pricking the skin in specific spots with needles. Drawing attention to these spots can increase blood flow and alleviate pain and addictions. Acupuncture is applied near a nicotine addict's ear for approximately 20 minutes. Acupuncture can decrease or nullify nicotine jitters and cravings, and even alleviate the irritability and restlessness associated with nicotine withdrawal.


Hypnosis can assist nicotine addicts in managing their addiction and withdrawal symptoms. Hypnosis helps patients deal with the psychological and physiological discomfort of quitting smoking and kicking the nicotine addiction. During hypnosis sessions, the subconscious mind is accessed and essentially reprogrammed to no longer desire nicotine products. Hypnosis holds that accessing the subconscious can increase a patient's willpower and desire to quit smoking and live nicotine-free.
