Some detergents have odor neutralizers as well as fragrances.
No one wants to be plagued by a bad smell. Whether its personal or around the house, we use many products to avoid unpleasant odors. Some cleaners and detergents have fragrances incorporated into their products but not all have odor neutralizers. Odor neutralizers are compounds that contain a molecule that attracts itself to organic decay. The molecule bonds with it and blocks the smell from the odor receptors in your nose. There are several common odor neutralizers that are found to work well in detergents and household cleansers.
Trisodium Phosphate
Trisodium phosphate is also called TSP. It is both a cleaning agent and an odor neutralizer, which can often be found in detergents. You can buy TSP in its powder form at hardware stores. It is a water-soluble ionic salt that raises PH levels. Dissolving directed amounts in water will usually remove most odors from carpets or clothing.
Activated Charcoal
Activated charcoal, derived from charcoal, is also known as activated carbon. It is an odor neutralizer often found in carpet cleaners. Organic odors often contain a carbon molecule similar to activated charcoal. The compounds are much smaller, however, and get eaten up by the larger activated charcoal surface. Chemical treatment brings out this property in activated charcoal as well.
Cyclodextrin
Cyclodextrin, considered one of the most effective odor neutralizers, is made from a sugar-like substance. It contains many of the same molecules of sugar. The compound is an active ingredient in many air fresheners and spot stain removers. For example, the product Frebreeze which contains cyclodextrin, is spayed on surfaces and in the air to neutralize odors.
Ammonia
Ammonia is one of the oldest odor neutralizers. It is an organic compound and an efficient cleaner as well as a remover of bad smells. Ammonia has a property that breaks down oils, which means it breaks down organic compounds responsible for odors. Ammonia is especially effective in eliminating the strong odor of cigarette smoke. Applied to walls it will also remove smoke damage from tar and nicotine. Ammonia is also the main ingredient in glass cleaners.
