Signs and symptoms After Giving up Smoking

Quitting smoking can be extremely beneficial to your health. Even though quitting smoking has many benefits to your health, there are certain bothersome symptoms that you will notice within the first few days and weeks after quitting that may tempt you to light up again. Crossing the hurdle of quitting smoking is a temporary process which, if followed through, leads to a better quality of life.


Weight Gain


Quitting smoking causes weight gain for a variety of reasons. One of the most common reasons people gain weight after quitting smoking is because of the constant need for oral gratification. People tend to fill the void of smoking with snack cakes, gum and other foods that cause weight gain. Weight gain following smoking cessation is minor and temporary in most cases. To combat weight gain after smoking cessation, select healthy foods such as vegetables, whole grain cereals and lean meats


Constipation


Nicotine has a laxative effect for people who smoke. Constipation after quitting smoking is temporary, much like constipation brought on by other types of changes in lifestyle or routine. Treatment of constipation related to smoking cessation should include increased fiber and water intake, along with laxatives for more severe constipation related to smoking cessation.


Withdrawal


Quitting the use of any drug leads to withdrawal symptoms. Symptoms of nicotine withdrawal may include nervousness, anxiety, depression and unpredictable mood swings. The symptoms of withdrawal from nicotine are temporary.


Irritability


The reason many people smoke is that it has a calming affect during times of stress. Quitting smoking often leads to stress and irritability during the first few weeks of withdrawal. Increase your chances for successfully kicking the smoking habit by avoiding stressful people and stressful situations.


Tastes


Foods and beverages may have unusual tastes after quitting smoking. As your taste buds become accustomed to being free from nicotine and tobacco, foods and beverages will taste more rich and flavorful.


Insomnia


During the first few weeks after quitting smoking, you may have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep. Consider the temporary use of sleep aids, or eating foods that induce relaxation before going to bed each night.
