Directions For Using The Fentanyl Transdermal System Patch

Fentanyl patches should be applied to a flat area of skin.

Fentanyl transdermal system patches, also known as Duragesic, contain fentanyl, a Schedule II opioid. Fentanyl is an addictive drug that patients can abuse. Use it according to your physician's directions. Fentanyl helps control moderate-to-severe pain by providing a continuous dosage of medication absorbed into the skin over a 72-hour period.

Instructions

1. Select an area where you will apply the Fentanyl patch. Place the patch on a flat surface such as the chest, back, upper arm or hip. Do not apply the patch to skin that has an abrasion or is irritated. Do not apply a patch in the same area if you are replacing an old patch. Rotate the location of the patch. If applying to a young child, select an area for the patch where he cannot remove it or pick at the patch. The upper back is a good site.

2. Clip any hair in the area where you will apply the patch. Do not shave the hair but cut as short as possible. A thin layer of hair is fine.

3. Clean the area with plain water. Do not use soaps or lotions on the patch site. Using soaps or lotions can alter the way the skin absorbs fentanyl and can reduce the adhesive strength of the patch. Allow the area to dry completely before attempting to attach the patch.

4. Open the package containing the fentanyl patch. Do not open until you are ready to apply the patch to the skin. Press the patch on and hold in place for 30 seconds. Rub around the edges of the patch to ensure it firmly attaches to the skin.
