Amoxicillin 500mg Information

Amoxicillin 500 mg tablets are prescription drugs used to treat a number of potentially contagious conditions. The medication belongs to a class of antibiotics known as penicillin, but cannot be taken by everybody or for every infection. Some people are allergic to penicillin and others cannot take amoxicillin 500 mg pills because it cannot treat conditions such as the common cold.

Conditions Treated

Amoxicillin 500 mg pills, and other strengths of this penicillin drug, can be used to treat sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) such as gonorrhea, according to MedlinePlus. Other conditions which can be effectively treated with amoxicillin 500 include bronchitis, pneumonia, ear infections, nose infections, throat infections, skin infections, and urinary tract infections. Amoxicillin can also help kill the H.pylori bacteria which can lead to ulcer formation. Flu, common cold, and related viral infections cannot be successfully cured by taking any type of amoxicillin.

Formulas

Amoxicillin 500 also comes in other formulas besides pills, according to MedlinePlus. Capsules, chewable tablets, liquid, and pediatric drops to be taken orally are also available for prescriptions. It is advisable to take amoxicillin liquid or pediatric drops mixed with beverages such as ginger ale, water, milk, fruit juice, or a cough syrup.

Other Uses

There are some other uses for amoxicillin 500 besides treating actual infections, according to MedlinePlus. Some people are prescribed the medication after possible anthrax exposure to reduce their chances of becoming infected. Pregnant women who may have anthrax or the skin or the STD chlamydia can also take the antibiotic in some cases, but require special medical supervision to reduce any risks to the unborn fetus.

Possible Side Effects

Side effects, some of which are potentially life-threatening, can occur when taking amoxicillin 500, according to MedlinePlus. Common side effects that rarely require emergency medical attention are as follows: upset stomach, diarrhea, and vomiting. Potentially serious side effects that call for immediate medical intervention are the following: serious skin rashes, hives, seizures, yellow skin or eyes, abnormal bruising or bleeding, pale skin, unusual fatigue, and excessive lack of energy.

Cost

Most insurance companies pay for all or part of the cost of amoxicillin 500 mg drug treatment. However, the amount of patient financial responsibility depends on the individual's healthcare plan. As of August 2009, uninsured cash-paying patients could expect to spend about $22 for 90 capsules and about $50 for liquid amoxicillin. Brand-name Amoxil tablets are also offered, with the self-pay cost being approximately $50 for 84 tablets.
