Free Housekeeping Services Solution For Tobacco Stains On Veneers

Dentures are expensive, so it's important to clean and maintain them properly. This will give them the best appearance and longest life, especially if you're a smoker. Nicotine stains build up quickly, making it important to have a cleaning schedule in place to keep residue from setting in. A few easy-to-make solutions are inexpensive and require little effort to complete.

Tobacco Stain Cleaning Solution

Tobacco stains can quickly turn bright white dentures to a dull yellow or brown color. When smoking regularly, it takes only a few days to discolor dentures, making it important to remove tobacco stains regularly. Mix a solution of 6 oz. water, 1 tsp. of Clorox bleach, and 2 tsp. of water softener (do not use detergent). Stir this solution to blend the ingredients, then place your dentures in the solution and soak them overnight. In the morning, rinse off any excess solution by brushing with a soft nylon toothbrush. This solution is safe for all resin complete dentures--do not use it on dentures with metal or soft linings. It should be used every three days to keep tobacco stains at bay.

Daily Cleaning Solution

A daily cleaning solution is also necessary to keep bacteria and other stains from building up, and will also assist in preventing tobacco residue from staining the dentures. Vinegar works to kill bacteria, and it breaks up the residue that stains dentures. Three to four times per week, soak your dentures overnight in a solution of 3 oz. of water and 3 oz.of white vinegar. This will dissolve the bacteria and plaque buildup that allows stains to develop. Baking soda also works to eliminate denture odor, including tobacco odor. Smokers should soak their dentures in a baking soda solution once daily for 20 minutes. Mix 6 oz. of water and 1 tsp. of baking soda. Let our dentures soak for 20 minutes, then rinse them with warm water and brush with a soft nylon toothbrush.

Denture Care

To keep dentures looking their best, it is important to take proper care of them. Rinse dentures after every meal, and after every cigarette, when possible. Remove dentures at night, so the gums can rest and breathe. This will promote long-term oral health and allow you to properly soak your dentures to prevent stains and bacterial buildup. Also soak your nylon toothbrush in a solution of one part water, one part bleach, once per week to prevent any fungus or bacteria from building up in the toothbrush itself.
