Withdrawal Signs and symptoms Of Giving up Smoking

When you quit smoking, the first couple of weeks are the hardest. Once you make it through the second or third week, your withdrawal symptoms should decrease substantially. You may experience physical, mental and emotional withdrawal symptoms. You may have mood swings, cravings and depression. Feelings of frustration and changes in your appetite may also occur.

Physical Symptoms

After you last cigarette and into the next couple of weeks, you may experience signs of a cold because the lungs are finally getting more oxygen than what they were getting when you were smoking. You may experience coughing and a sore throat. Breathing may be labored at first, but will subside.

Emotional and Mental Symptoms

You can experience emotional and mental symptoms after you stop smoking, which can include anxiety, irritability, confusion, insomnia and temper tantrums. You are going through a huge change in your lifestyle and it is easy to feel as if you are losing control and resort to crying and feeling lost.

Anger, Mood Swings and Boredom

Little things can upset you and cause you to yell, scream and take your anger out on those around you. You may be happy one minute and crying the next minute. Mood swings are part of the quitting process. You may be bored. This is especially true of your hands. Most people will need something to do with their hands to keep them busy.

Cravings, Depression and Dizziness

The cravings for a cigarette are intense, but if you wait it out, it usually subsides within minutes. You may have feelings of depression and experience dizziness in the first few days as the oxygen circulates through your body. If you feel dizzy, it is your body's way of dealing with the clean air.

Frustration, Fatigue and Appetite

Most people will tell you to eat something when you have a craving, but your newly found appetite can cause weight gain. You can drink water when you crave a cigarette, which is healthier. You will feel frustration and have bouts of fatigue. These symptoms subside as the days past. If you are frustrated, take a walk or start doing something that keeps you busy and takes your mind off cigarettes.
