Reasons For Smoking

Stress

Smoking is an incredibly addictive and dangerous habit that plagues millions of Americans each year. Smoking can cause general discomfort, lung disease and even cancer. One of the things that causes people to start smoking is stress. Nicotine and other chemicals contained in cigarette and tobacco smoke stimulate the part of the human brain that relieves stress. If a person is worried about something or is generally stressed out, smoking a cigarette can instantly calm a person down. This can result in a person becoming addicted to nicotine, which in turn develops into a full-fledged smoking habit.

Peer Pressure

Peer pressure causes many young people to take up smoking each year. If an impressionable youth has friends who smoke, it may seem like the "cool" thing to do. Teens are likely to follow in the habits of those around them, and that includes taking up smoking. Advertising also plays a role in the beginning of smoking habits in a similar manner. Laws exist that dictate where and when tobacco companies can advertise out of fear that ads may appeal to younger people and start them down the road to a dangerous habit earlier in their life.

Addiction

Another cause of a smoking habit is the addictive chemicals contained in the smoke itself. In addition to general carcinogens and other cancer-causing agents, cigarette smoke has a number of chemicals that are highly addictive in nature. Smoking a cigarette can stimulate a person's brain and instantly make her feel good. However, when the effects of the cigarette smoke wear of, she can start to go through a withdrawal and feel cravings for another cigarette. This can lead to a regular smoking habit fairly quickly.
