Apply Tar Having A Trowel

A bucket of tar makes using a trowel easy.

Tarring a roof can be a dirty and hot job. Most tar roofing jobs with use a hot mop or roller to cover large portions of the roof with tar. Tar roof will tend to blister and need repaired. These repairs can be completed quickly with the use of some tar, a trowel and some fabric. A roofing trowel will have a rounded nose, a triangle shaped body, a flat blade and a wooden handle.

Instructions

1. Purchase a bucket of tar from a home supply store. Discuss the size of your project with a sales representative. You will be able to determine the amount of tar needed for your project. If you are doing small repairs, one or two buckets of tar should do.

2. Apply the tar to the roof using the trowel. Scoop out the desired amount of tar and place it onto the area that needs to be tarred. Use the flat side of the trowel to smooth the tar. In repairs, the tar should extend at least 6 inches beyond the damaged area.

3. Apply a piece of cotton or fiberglass fabric to the entire repaired area. Set the fabric into the tar using the trowel to position and smooth as best as possible.

4. Apply another layer of tar on top of the fabric. Use the flat part of the trowel to smooth the entire repair.
