Listing Of Stopsmoking Drugs

Smoking cigarettes is an addictive habit that is harmful to your health. According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 50 percent of smokers in the United States attempt to quit this habit each year. Only about 10 percent of those people are successful. With the aid of a smoking medication, your chances of success that is long term is increased, according to the American Medical Association. This type of medication will also help with the process of withdrawing from nicotine.

Chantix

Chantix, also known as varenicline, has been around since 2006. This medication comes in pill form and is started with a low dose and then gradually built up. The first week that you are taking Chantix you are told that you can smoke but that a designated stop date should be decided upon. The doses of Chantix are increased 3 days after starting the medication and then 4 days after that until the maximum daily dosage is reached. The most common side effects of Chantix are constipation, difficulty with sleeping, unusual dreaming, gas, headaches and nausea. Out of all of the smoking cessation aids, Chantix has shown the best results, with a 60 percent higher success rate than other oral medications such as Zyban according to a study done in 2005 at the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco in Texas. Chantix is a prescription medication. Be alert for any signs of behavioral changes if you are taking this medication. If this does occur, you should stop taking Chantix and notify your doctor.

Nicotine Replacement

There are several forms of nicotine replacement. There are patches, gum, lozenges and nasal spray. A prescription is needed for the nasal spray. However, no prescriptions are needed for lozenges, patches or gum. The gum, nasal spray and lozenges are taken throughout the day instead of smoking cigarettes. The nicotine patch is applied every day. The effectiveness of a nicotine replacement is comparable to the medication Zyban.

The main side effects involved with a nicotine replacement aid are jaw pain with the gum, nasal irritation with the spray and difficulties in sleeping and unusual dreaming with the patches. These products are used for approximately 3 to 6 months depending on the need.

Zyban

Zyban, also known as bupropion, is a prescription medication pill. You take this medication similar to how you would Chantix, starting a week before your actual quit date. It is started as a low dose and increases after a week. This medication is generally taken for 3 months or longer as needed. This smoking cessation aid gets approximately the same results as a nicotine replacement aid. The major side effects experienced while taking Zyban are sleep difficulties, dry mouth, anxiety, headache and irritability. Seizures are a rare but possible side effect.
