Nicotiana Plant Care Info

Nicotiana, commonly known as Flowering Tobacco, is a fragrant flower native to South America. Nicotiana flowers are trumpet-shaped, and the plant blooms repeated through the summer months. This flower is an excellent choice if you wish to attract hummingbirds to your garden.

When to Plant

You can start Nicotiana seedlings indoors or direct-sow them in the garden, but you should only plant them outside after the last danger of frost has passed.

Where to Plant

The Flowering Tobacco plant likes full sun to partial shade, and a rich, loamy soil that is moist but never water-logged. It prefers warm temperatures and warm water. You can also grow Nicotiana in pots as a houseplant under the same conditions.

Pests

Flowering tobacco is prone to spider mites, aphids and other pests. Regularly check leaves for signs of pests, and treat with pesticides if necessary. If you prefer not to use chemical pesticides but have a garden-pest problem, try releasing ladybugs onto your plants. Ladybugs are especially effective at resolving aphid problems.

Warning

Nicotiana is part of the tobacco family, and, as its Latin name suggests, the plant does contain nicotine, which can be poisonous to pets and children. Handle these plants with care.
