Ideas To Stop Smoking

Although an estimated 5 million people worldwide have died from the effects of smoking, individuals continue to smoke. Nicotine is a powerful substance found in cigarettes that makes smoking extremely difficult to give up. However, using nicotine-based aids and other methods can give you a better chance of toughing out the withdrawal process and becoming smoke-free.

Cold Turkey

Quitting cold turkey means instantly stopping your smoking habit. Success rates tend to be higher for people who quit cold turkey because the nicotine is flushed out of the system more quickly, making the withdrawal process a bit faster. Be prepared for possible withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety, inability to concentrate, insomnia and mood swings. Nicotine usually leaves the system within 72 hours of quitting cold turkey, and the withdrawal pains will diminish. Drinking lots of water, exercising and meditating will help in the withdrawal process.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy

For people who cannot handle the painful withdrawal process of quitting cold turkey, nicotine replacement aids, also known as NRT, may be more suitable. Nicotine replacement aids come in various forms and are usually sold over the counter. Nicotine patches, which can worn on the arm daily, work by releasing nicotine into the system through the skin. Alternately, nicotine gum works in a similar way--nicotine enters your system after being released into the mouth. A doctor should recommend the strength of the dosage.

Reward System

An effective way to help stay smoke-free is to develop a reward system. For example, spend the money that you would have spent on cigarettes on other things. Giving yourself a new gift each successful smoke-free week can help you continue on the track of finally beating nicotine dependency.
