Prazosin Unwanted Effects

Prazosin, frequently sold under the brand name Minipress, is a drug used for treating hypertension (high blood pressure). The use of Minipress may cause a variety of side effects based on the dosage and particular individual.

Identification

Prazosin is considered an alpha-blocker which causes the blood vessels in the body to both relax and expand. In doing so, Prazosin effectively treats high blood pressure and enlarged prostate. Prazosin works by blocking the body's natural chemicals causing the constriction of vessels.

Common Side Effects

The following less serious side effects may occur as a result of using Prazosin: dizziness and drowsiness, irregular urination, joint or muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, fatigue, headache, dry mouth, mild depression and nosebleed. Any persistent side effects from the above list require immediate medical attention as they may signal a more serious problem.

Serious Side Effects

According to drugs.com, users of Prazosin have experienced a number of serious side effects including blurred vision, pounding heartbeat, puffiness of the extremities, chest pain and shortness of breath. Severe allergic reaction may also occur. Contact your doctor immediately in the case of any of these severe side effects.

Using Prazosin

Prazosin can be taken with or without food, but the user should closely follow her particular prescription. Never take a double dose to compensate for a missed dose, instead skip the dose and continue on your regular schedule. Take with a full glass (8 oz.) of water and before bedtime to avoid dizziness and lightheadedness.

Warning

Since Prazosin can cause dizziness and lightheadedness, be sure to sit up and stand slowly. Avoid alcohol as it can increase the intensity of certain side effects. Prazosin should be used with extreme caution in the elderly and children as the safety of the medication has not yet been confirmed for them. If pregnant or breast-feeding, alert your doctor before using Prazosin.
