Nicotrol Inhaler Instructions

Stop Smoking

Quitting smoking is a challenging task. The dangers of smoking are well known and quitting now can greatly improve health and quality of life. There are many products available for smoking cessation. Researching methods and talking with a physician can help smokers choose an appropriate method to be successful in quitting.

Before You Use

Making a commitment to stop smoking is necessary before starting the Nicotrol inhaler treatment program. It is necessary to completely stop smoking cigarettes prior to use due to the potential for nicotine overdose. Make an appointment with a physician and develop a treatment plan for using the Nicotrol inhaler. A doctor will prescribe Nicotrol depending on the amount of tobacco use. Finding other sources of smoking cessation support increases the probability of quitting completely.

Starting the Program

Picking up the prescription from a pharmacy is the first step in getting started. The Nicotrol inhaler and cartridges may not be covered by insurance and can be expensive ( about $100). Following the instructions provided by a physician is important to be successful in quitting smoking. Because nicotine is addictive, it is possible to become dependent on the nicotine in Nicotrol. Gradually decreasing the doses can help prevent negative withdrawal symptoms.

Using the Nicotrol Inhaler

Assembling the plastic inhaler requires removing it from the plastic wrap, pushing and twisting the two plastic pieces together. The cartridges are packaged separately. Peel back the packaging of the cartridge and insert into inhaler. Push until the cartridge pops into place. Inhale deeply or puff on the cartridge. The nicotine in the cartridge will turn into a vapor. A burning sensation or coughing may result. One cartridge can be used as needed for up to 20 minutes of active puffing. One cartridge may even last for a few days depending on your cessation schedule. When the cartridge is empty, remove from inhaler and discard.
