The decision to quit smoking is often a difficult one. The majority of smokers know the health benefits of quitting, but the nicotine cravings are often too strong to overcome. Remember that it is never too late to reap the benefits of a smoke-free life. Quitting, no matter how old you are, will instantly decrease your risk for various diseases and disorders.

According to the American Cancer Society, smoking is a risk factor for many different cancers, including cancer of the lungs, mouth, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, kidney, bladder, pancreas, cervix, stomach and various types of leukemia. Smoking is also a risk factor for lung diseases, heart disease and blindness.

Controlling Your Cravings

One of the biggest hurdles to overcome when trying to quit smoking is the craving for nicotine. To stop smoking, you must learn to control your cravings. You won't crave cigarettes constantly; the urges will come and go. When you do feel the urge to light up, there are various things you can do to ease the cravings. Try snacking on something, like sunflower seeds, raisins or sugar-free gum. Take a shower or wash the dishes when you're craving a cigarette. Or, try some mental relaxation exercises, like envisioning yourself in your favorite place and thinking about nothing else for 10 minutes. Your craving shouldn't last long, so doing something in the meantime will get you over that hump.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy

Some smokers cannot stop smoking because of nicotine withdrawal symptoms. Nicotine Replacement Therapy, also known as NRT, is a great way for smokers to overcome the withdrawal symptoms they may experience when they decide to quit. NRT comes in different forms: patches, gums, inhalers, lozenges and nasal sprays. If you find that you are unable to stop smoking by mentally controlling your cravings, NRT may be a good match for you.

Reward Yourself

It is important to reward yourself when you have decided to quit smoking. For example, if you smoke a pack of cigarettes a day, take the money that you would normally be spending on cigarettes and put it in a jar. At the end of the week, take out the money you saved and use it to buy yourself something nice as a reward for your hard work. This will give you something to look forward to other than lighting up a cigarette. By doing this, you will also see the large amount of money you will be saving once you completely kick the habit.

See Your Physician

If you have tried quitting on your own, but can't seem to shake the urge to smoke, it may be time to talk to your doctor. He will be ecstatic about your life-changing decision, and will be more than happy to help. There are certain prescriptions and inhalers that can help you deal with nicotine cravings. Talk to your physician about your situation, and he will recommend the best form of treatment for you.
