Make a Tobacco Can Snowman Ornament

Cigar boxes have been reused and recycled for years, why not those sturdy little smokeless tobacco cans? The size and shape make them a wonderful and free supply for making a tobacco can snowman ornament. Once painted, the can becomes camouflaged and a blank slate for crafting. Ask if you can place a deposit box at a local factory to collect your tobacco snowman ornament base and be prepared to take orders. They are so easy and fast to make, you will want to add this ornament to your craft show merchandise this year.

Instructions

Crafting the Snowman

1. Sponge paint the top and bottom of the can using the off white acrylic paint and the sea sponge. Allow the paint to dry. Turn the can over and sponge paint the bottom of the can. Allow the paint to dry. Repeat with a second coat if needed for thorough coverage.

2. Cut a piece of fleece five inches tall by nine and a half inches wide for the tobacco can snowman hat.

3. Lay the piece wrong side up and fold one short end to the center. Apply hot glue on the folded short end of the fleece. Fold the opposite short end to the center and place over the glue. Overlap a half inch. Allow the glue to cool.

4. Turn up one open end of the hat an inch to form a brim. Slip the brim of the hat onto the tobacco can. Cover half of the can. Hot glue the hat to the snowman's head.

5. Cut a 1/4-inch-wide by 6-inch-long strip of fleece. Pull the top of the hat together and tie the fleece strip around the gathers, forming a top knot on the hat.

6. Insert the tapestry needle through the top knot, using the crochet thread to form a hanger, for the tobacco can snowman ornament. Cut the crochet thread and knot the ends together.

7. Apply blush to the cheeks of the snowman using the cotton swab.

8. Apply two chocolate chip-sized eyes centered 1/8 inch below the hat brim and 1/8 inch apart using the black dimensional fabric paint.

9. Apply a small triangle-shaped carrot nose sideways below the eyes using the orange dimensional fabric paint. Allow the paint to dry.
