Quit Social Smoking

Trying to quit social smoking can be just as difficult as trying to quit regular smoking. Most people smoke socially because they are more apt to smoke while drinking, because they feel more comfortable in a big group of people while smoking, or because they mostly spend time with smokers. These factors all make it harder to quit social smoking.

Instructions

1. Figure out why you smoke in social settings. Are all of your friends smokers? Do you feel more comfortable after having nicotine in large groups? Do you itch for a cigarette after a couple of alcoholic beverages?

2. Take action, once you figure out what leads you to smoke. If nicotine makes you feel more comfortable in social settings, chew nicotine gum when you want a cigarette. Don't replace smoking with nicotine gum, but if it helps, proceed to weaning yourself off nicotine gum.

3. Ask your friends to help you stop social smoking. If you decide you smoke because your friends do, tell your friends you don't want to smoke anymore. Tell them if they see you with a cigarette, they should remind you that you're trying to quit and encourage you to put out the cigarette. Ask if a friend or two will stay inside with you when everyone else goes outside to smoke. If you have another friend who is only a social smoker, she may want to quit with you.

4. Don't drink when you go out. After a few times without alcohol, you may realize that your desire for a cigarette goes away when you aren't drinking. See at what point you want a cigarette. Maybe you are drinking too much, or maybe a certain drink makes you crave a cigarette. Start by not drinking alcohol at all. If you make it without smoking, have one or two beers the next time. If you still make it without smoking, drink your normal amount. If you can go without smoking in a social setting for two months, you may kick the habit.
