Exactly What Does A Burning Sensation Within The Leg Mean

When the human body experiences an unusual sensation and the cause cannot be seen, people can jump to the conclusion that something very bad is happening. But in reality, there are a plethora of reasons why your thigh would feel as if it were on fire. Here are a few of those reasons, ranging from totally innocuous to those requiring immediate medical attention.

Sciatica

The sciatic nerve runs all the way through the leg, from your lower back to your foot. When the nerve is pinched or experiences irritation or pinching, a burning sensation may occur in the lower buttocks and thigh region. This condition should be monitored by a doctor because, though most cases clear up on their own, some instances require surgery to correct.

Meralgia Paresthetica

Skinny jeans are trendy, but they are also a root cause of a condition called meralgia paresthetica. Tight clothes can compress the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve, creating the sensation of burning along the outer thigh.

Fibromyalgia

If the burning sensation is extreme to the point it is causing you to wake in the middle of the night, it is important to see your doctor to rule out a condition called fibromyalgia. Although this is not a life-threatening problem, fibromyalgia can cause chronic pain, eventually affecting a person's ability to get adequate sleep and perform daily tasks.

Recent Surgery

After performing a hip replacement or knee replacement, doctors typically prescribe months of physical therapy. When the joint replacement is put into the body, nerves are cut, and they will take some time to heal properly. In the short term, the severed nerves might cause a burning sensation, but soon the discomfort will decrease and eventually go away altogether.

Damaged Muscles

During intense workouts, an athlete is purposefully damaging his muscles. This might sound counterproductive, but actually the process of damaging and healing makes the muscles much stronger. If the burning sensation is the result of a strenuous workout, rest assured that if you go easy on your thighs for the next few workouts and let them heal, you will soon be rewarded with stronger muscles.
