When you are ready to stop smoking but need help there are a variety of options for you to choose from. Prescription medication is one of those options that has often proved effective. Many people turn to prescriptions to stop smoking when other methods have failed.

1. Make an appointment with your doctor to discuss taking a prescription medication to help you stop smoking. Most medical professionals will be happy you chose to ask them for help and will have plenty of information for you. Your doctor can advise you on choosing the best prescription to help you stop smoking and can guide you in the process.


2. Consider non-nicotine prescriptions to help you quit smoking, especially if patches or nicotine gum haven't helped you. These prescriptions help you quit by blocking the nicotine receptors in your brain. Zyban is a nicotine-free means of reducing your nicotine cravings. Chantix focuses on blocking the pleasure experienced from smoking. Discuss these prescriptions, and which might be better for you, with your doctor.


3. Get an appointment with a counselor who specializes in addictions. Meet with the counselor once a week to discuss your progress, downfalls, tribulations and feelings about stopping smoking with prescriptions. This can help you work through the emotional and behavioral aspects of quitting.


4. Join a support group devoted to stopping smoking. Call your local hospital to see if they have one accepting new members. If they do not, they should be able to direct you to one in your area. A support group for smokers trying to stop can help you see that you are not alone. Share with the group that you are using prescriptions to break the habit, and talk with others doing the same.


5. Get support from your family. You'll need their help and guidance. Make your home a nonsmoking area going forward. Ask someone you trust to be your support buddy during your stop-smoking endeavor. This person should be one who is available to meet together or go for coffee or lunch if you're feeling stressed. The ideal person is someone who has quit smoking or one who has never smoked.
