Electrostatic Dust Prevention

Electrostatic Dust Prevention

Dust is a composite term applied to fine particles in an environment. They can acquire an electrostatic charge positively or negatively. Dust attracted to TV screens and electronic equipment is a nuisance. This same attracting force can be used to capture unwanted dust particles and remove them permanently. The best way to ward off dust buildup is prevent it in the first place. Many dust removal techniques are employed at home and in industry for health and product quality control.

Home Electrostatic Dust Control

Some home air filters can charge dust particles and capture them on an oppositely charged cleanable collector media. The charged particles are dropped out or precipitated out of the air moving through the air filter. This reduces localized allergens such as hair, dust mites and nicotine. These electronic air filters can operate in a bedroom or in conjunction with a home air heating/cooling system. Check out the efficiency claims of the manufacturer with reputable consumer product evaluation laboratories. Some units produce ozone from internal electric discharge or arcing and have a sweet pungent smell. Ozone is a powerful oxidant, listed as one of the EPA's top five ambient air pollutants.

Another simple technique is to use Microfilter cloth to dust and clean. The idea is to trap the dust using its natural electrostatic attraction to remove it. Some dusters just move the dust around until it resettles. The Microfilter cloth can be reused by running it through your washing machine. Do not use fabric softener, as it will eliminate the dust attracting power.

Some vacuum cleaners have efficient HEPA filters and do an excellent job on fine particles. Carpets, upholstery and drapes should be vacuumed regularly.

Industry Electrostatic Dust Control

Clean rooms for electronic work and pharmaceutical drug production require highly purified air. Electrostatic precipitation, or ESP, is used as part of the air filtering process. Air pollution control uses giant ESP units on coal-fired boilers in power plants. Sometimes ESP is used for product quality control, as in the manufacture of paper.
