Nicotrol Inhaler System Instructions

The Nicotrol inhaler is a device that helps you stop smoking. It does this by decreasing the amount of nicotine you consume over time so that you are gradually weaned from your nicotine addiction. The device delivers a small amount of aerosolized nicotine with each puff. The Nicotrol inhaler is available through your doctor by prescription only.

Preparation

Visit your doctor for a prescription for the Nicotrol inhaler and to receive instructions for the number of times used each day. Tell the prescribing doctor about any medications you take and about your medical history. The Nicotrol inhaler may not be the best choice for you if you have heart disease, poor circulation, hyperthyroidism or respiratory disease.

Before you begin treatment with the Nicotrol inhaler you must be committed to quitting cigarettes. Do not smoke while using the inhaler or you may experience unpleasant symptoms associated with nicotine toxicity such as cold sweat, headache, tremor, trouble breathing, dizziness, low blood pressure, confusion and abdominal pain.

Procedure

Open the Nicotrol package and take the plastic wrap off of the mouthpiece. Press the bottom and top together and turn the pieces so the markings are in alignment. Pull the pieces apart. Remove the cartridges from the package and peel back the covering to remove one cartridge. Slip it into your inhaler and press down hard so it pops into place. Align the markings once more and push the pieces snugly together. Now turn the top so the markings are no longer aligned and the unit becomes locked.

Put the inhaler into your mouth and inhale deeply or take short puffs. When you pull air through the inhaler the nicotine becomes vaporized and deposits in your mouth and throat. Puff on the inhaler for about 20 minutes. After that time the nicotine will be used up.

Your initial stage of treatment will last approximately 12 weeks and during this time you should use the inhaler every time you have a strong urge to smoke. Do not use more than 16 cartridges each day. You can take as many puffs on the cartridge as you like during the 20 minute period. The inhaler replicates the movements you would go through when smoking a cigarette and delivers a dose of nicotine to relieve your craving. Gradually decrease the number of cartridges each day until you are able to stop using them completely.

Safety

Store the Nicotrol inhaler in the locked position in a plastic case when not in use to protect it from light. Keep the cartridges away from pets and children as nicotine is poisonous. Dispose of used cartridges by throwing them into the trash immediately. Occasionally wash the mouthpiece with warm soapy water and rinse well.

The Nicotrol inhaler is not meant to be used long term. Do not use for longer than six months. If you find that you do not decrease the number of cartridges you use over the first four weeks or if you cannot stop smoking cigarettes while using the inhaler, then stop using it and try at a later time when you are truly ready to stop smoking.
