Chewing tobacco, or smokeless tobacco, snuff, spit and spitless tobacco, comes in many forms; users generally either inhale them or place them directly into the mouth in small wet or dry bunches. According the American Cancer Society, the use of smokeless tobacco products can lead to certain types of cancer, receding gums, bad breath and stained teeth.

Set a Date

Set a date on the calender to quit. Choose a comparatively recent date--within the in the next month--or, according to the American Cancer Society, you may change your mind. Mark the date on the calender and let your friends and family know that you plan to quit using smokeless tobacco on that day. Having the support of people in your life will help you take this first crucial step.

List Reasons for Quitting

Make a list of reasons why quitting the use of smokeless tobacco products will benefit your life. Write this list down--which may include the financial, health or social benefits of quitting--and keep it in a visible place, such as attached to a bedroom mirror or the refrigerator. Ask friends and family members to make their own contributions to the list as well.

Replace Smokeless Tobacco

Throw out all of your smokeless tobacco products on quit day. Purchase products that can help you quit. An oral substitute for the products, such as gum, suckers or hard candy can go into your mouth instead of the smokeless tobacco products. According to the American Cancer Society, quitting aids, such as nicotine lip balm, nicotine water, tobacco lozenges and nicotine lollipops can give the body small amounts of nicotine to help you quit while controlling cravings.

Helping Withdrawal Symptoms

According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, a person attempting to stop the use of smokeless tobacco products may encounter withdrawal symptoms in the first two weeks. These symptoms may include feelings or irritability, constipation, and a desire for sweets. You can remedy these issues by practicing deep breathing, exercising, introducing fiber to the diet and consuming low-sugar sweets to combat cravings. These sweets could include sugar-free candy or apples.
