Remove Tobacco Stains From Veneers

Dentures, not unlike natural teeth, can acquire stains from certain drinks like tea or coffee, or tobacco products. Many denture-cleaning products are on the market, although some household items may also be useful in removing denture stains. Proper care and the use of cleaning products ensure that dentures are stain-free.

Instructions

1. Prevent stains from occurring. It will create less work in stain removal. Preventing denture stains is as easy as practicing good oral hygiene practices every day. The American Dental Association recommends that dentures be brushed daily to remove food and plaque, and to keep the mouth healthy.

2. Rinse away particles that may have accumulated throughout the day. This step is important because it removes large pieces of food that are stuck on the set of dentures. Rinsing should be done in water that is not hot, because according to the American Dental Association hot water can cause dentures to warp over time.

3. Brush your dentures daily. The American Dental Association recommends using a toothbrush with soft bristles or a denture brush to clean dentures. Hard-bristled brushes may cause damage to the dentures' surfaces. The ADA also recommends brushing dentures with a denture cleaner with the ADA seal of acceptance due to the products testing for safety and efficiency. Hand soap and mild dishwashing soap are also approved cleaners for dentures.

4. Use a denture-cleaning product specially formulated to remove tobacco stains. Many products are available for patients who smoke and wear dentures. An example of one tobacco stain-removing product is Polident Smokers. This product, like other smoker's products, is made to remove nicotine stains.

5. Bleach your dentures if tobacco stains are severe. Although the ADA recommends avoiding bleach and other household cleaners, it may be used as a last resort for badly stained dentures, according to Livestrong.com. Bleach must be diluted first before it is used for this purpose. A ratio of 1 part bleach to 10 parts water is to be used. After this is made, dentures must be soaked in water for 20 to 30 minutes. This will remove the tobacco stain, but may also affect the color of the gums.
