The fentanyl transdermal patch is a narcotic pain reliever indicated only for patients with chronic pain who have not responded to other pain relievers.

The fentanyl patch is available is 12mcg/hr, 25mcg/hr, 50mcg/hr, 75mcg/hr and 100mcg/hr strengths.

Common Side Effects

The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting, constipation, mental and respiratory depression, itching and localized rash at the sight of the patch.

Since fentanyl is a narcotic, there is the risk for developing dependence. Patients should be monitored closely for any sign of dependency and addiction.

Patients who use the fentanyl patch may experience withdrawal symptoms which include agitation, restlessness, anxiety, insomnia, tremor, abdominal cramps, blurred vision, vomiting and sweating. These symptoms can occur from stopping the medication abruptly or tapering it off too quickly.

There have been numerous recalls of the fentanyl patch due to leaking gel from the patch itself. Leakage can cause significant respiratory depression and also has the added risk of potential fatal overdoses.
