The decision to quit smoking is rewarding but difficult.

Smoking will destroy your health. Smokers have to deal with damage to their mouths, throats and lungs. You are not only hurting your health, but you are hurting anyone around you when you smoke. Secondhand smoke can be a health threat for people living with a smoker. Also, the cost of smoking is enormous over time. But as anyone who has ever tried will tell you, quitting is not easy.

Instructions

1. Decide to quit smoking. Though this may seem like an obvious step, many times when people fail to quit smoking, it is because they did not really want to quit badly enough. Make clear to yourself the reason you are quitting. These reasons are the motivation that will carry you through the tough times.

2. Pick a quit day and begin preparing for it. Tell your friends and family about the commitment you are making so they can help to hold you accountable.

3. Stop smoking on quit day. Stay active with exercise, work or hobbies to reduce stress. Drink plenty of water and avoid situations where the desire to smoke is strong. Remove tobacco products and ashtrays from your home and your car.

4. Deal with the withdrawal symptoms by avoiding situations where you are tempted to smoke and avoid allowing your mind to rationalize why you should smoke.
