Albuterol Inhaler Instructions

Asthma is a common condition that can be life-threatening if not treated quickly. Many asthma sufferers use an albuterol inhaler for prevention of asthma attacks and as a rescue inhaler during an attack. An albuterol inhaler can be a life saver, but it is important to use it correctly.

Preparing the Inhaler

Albulterol is packaged in a small container with a mouthpiece for inhalation. Shake the canister for five seconds to mix the ingredients. If you are using it for the first time or have not used it for more than a week, prime it with two to four test sprays into the air. As priming requirements vary, consult the instructions that came with your inhaler.

Exhale

Blow all of the air out of your lungs. It is important to rid you lungs of air as completely as possible so that you will be able to fully inhale the complete dose of albuterol.

Dispense Albuterol

Wrap your lips around the mouthpiece and press firmly on the canister as you breathe in slowly. Inhale completely and hold your breath for 10 seconds. If you need more than once inhalation, wait 60 seconds before taking the next one.

Cleaning the Inhaler

Clean your inhaler weekly so that medicine buildup does not block the spray. Take off the cap. Dampen a clean cotton swab and, using a circular motion, remove residue from the spray opening.

Consider a Spacer

Consult with your doctor about obtaining a spacer, an air chamber that could improve delivery of the medication. You would breath in through the spacer, which in turn is attached to the mouthpiece of the inhaler.
