Cream Of Tartar Health Uses

Cream of Tartar Health Uses

Potassium hydrogen tartrate, popularly known as cream of tartar, has been used in everyday cooking for hundreds of years. Discovered as a by-product of the wine fermenting process, this acidic salt is best known for making cakes lighter and meringue stronger. But homeopathic medicine recognizes cream of tartar for a number of health uses as well, some of which pre-date the recipes we now utilize it in today.

Urinary Tract Infections

Before antibiotics found their way into our homes, cream of tartar was a popular method to eliminate painful urinary tract infections. The cream of tartar changes your pH level and helps your body kill the internal bacteria. Mix a couple of teaspoons into a half-cup of warm water and drink, one to two times a day. Many homeopathic practitioners also suggest adding a splash of lime juice, as your body will also need the vitamin C to stave off the infection.

Nicotine Detox

Smoking is a powerful addiction, and each year people use thousands of methods, from prescription drugs to hypnotherapy, to help them quit. While weaning the body off of nicotine through the use of patches and gum has become increasingly popular, a number of home remedies favor immediate cessation and then a cleansing of the body. One recipe calls for mixing a teaspoon of cream of tartar into a glass of orange juice once a day. The orange juice helps the body fight the withdrawal, while the cream of tartar starts the nicotine detoxification process.

Heartburn

Heartburn, associated with stress and spicy foods, can be very painful, and many over-the-counter drugs take hours to days to start working. An immediate remedy is to mix a half teaspoon of cream of tartar with a half teaspoon of baking soda, and blend into in a warm or lukewarm cup of water. Relief should occur within minutes of drinking the solution.
