Start with a discussion with your physician about your desire to quit or cut down on smoking. A lung function test may be done to compare your lung with a nonsmoking person's lungs, giving you your lung age. Knowing your lung age can be a motivation for you to quit smoking. Your physician will suggest options and steps to take to reduce your nicotine intake, such as replacing smoking with nicotine chewing gum or nicotine patches. Your doctor might also refer you to smoking cessation support groups.


Reduce Your Nicotine Intake


Smoking a low-tar and low-nicotine cigarette will encourage your body to adapt to functioning with less and less nicotine while cutting down on the effects of nicotine on your body. Change to a cigarette brand that is not as pleasant as your usual brand; this can lead you to smoke less and reduce your nicotine intake.


Decrease the Number of Cigarettes You Smoke


Cut down on the number of cigarettes you smoke by smoking only half of each cigarette. Include foods with your meal that discourage you to smoke. Milk is one food that many people think does not go with smoking. As you make progress in cutting down on your daily cigarette intake, reward yourself by setting aside the money you save from buying fewer cigarettes. Buy yourself a special treat or donate to your favorite charity.

Discourage and cut down on your smoking habits by making it difficult to have access to cigarettes.


Stop buying cigarettes in cartons; instead buy a new pack when you run out. Stop storing cigarettes at home and at work; this will make it more difficult to have cigarettes with you all the time. Become more informed about the risks and hazards of smoking on your health, the effects of secondhand smoke and the effects smoking has on the environment.
