Atherosclerosis is a disease in which your veins and arteries become hard and narrow, compromising blood flow. It is also one of the main culprits of cardiovascular disease. According to the American Heart Association, cardiovascular disease is the number one leading cause of death in the United States. Although the exact cause is unknown, atherosclerosis is believed to start in childhood. Thankfully there are many options to improve the condition of clogged arteries and veins in order to prevent heart attacks.

1. Look at your diet. If you are consuming fried foods and junk food on a daily basis, it's time to gradually shift to a healthier diet. Some fats are actually good for your heart, such as the healthy omega fats found in nuts, olive oil and cold water fish. Aim for an array of colorful fruits and vegetables and stick to lean sources of protein such as chicken breast, turkey, and fish.


2. If you smoke, quit. It's not easy, but your heart health depends on it. There are numerous options to help you quit, such as nicotine replacement therapy, prescription medications and even hypnosis. There are also a number of websites where you can connect with people who are trying to quit just like you. That extra support can make a big difference.


3. Start exercising. Moderate exercise is one of the best things you can do for your heart health. Walking 30 minutes a day is a great way to begin a more active lifestyle. Walking also reduces stress, which will help keep your heart healthy and happy. Swimming, jogging and running are other options. However, it's best to consult your doctor before starting any new exercise routine.


4. Keep your cholesterol levels in check. High cholesterol levels put you at risk for a heart attack. If your cholesterol is high, your doctor may recommend medication. There are also things you can do at home to help reduce your cholesterol levels. Consuming flax seed is said to keep cholesterol levels in check. Make sure your liver is healthy too, since the liver is one of the main organs responsible for metabolizing cholesterol from the blood. An excellent liver tonic is warm water with lemon first thing in the morning.


5. If you have been diagnosed with severe cardiovascular disease, your doctor may perform cardiac catheterization. This is a very common procedure and involves inserting a thin tube through an artery in your arm or leg in order to access the clogged artery.The blocked artery is viewed on a live X-ray screen. Catheters and stents are then used to open the artery for easy passage of blood.
