Scopolamine Unwanted Effects

Scopolamine is a prescription anticholinergic medication used to treat and manage motion sickness and its symptoms, including vomiting and nausea. It is also used to treat vomiting and nausea caused by surgery and procedures that involve anesthesia. As with any type of medication, there are some possible side effects associated with the use of Scopolamine.

Common Side Effects

These common side effects are generally not considered to be cause for alarm, as they tend to subside on their own as the body adapts to the medication. These side effects include dizziness, feeling lightheaded, flushing, dry mouth and blurry vision.

Serious Side Effects

There are also several serious side effects associated with Scopolamine use. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek emergency medical attention as soon as possible. These potentially harmful side effects include problems with urination, irregular or rapid heartbeat, confusion, disorientation, mental or mood changes, extremely dry mouth, difficulty speaking, extreme drowsiness and hallucinations.

Allergic Reactions

Allergic reactions are also considered to be serious side effects of Scopolamine. If a reaction occurs, get medical assistance as soon as possible. Some signs of allergic reaction to Scopolamine include trouble breathing, chest tightness, itchiness, skin rash, breaking out into hives, and swelling of the tongue, mouth, lips and face.

Caution

Notify your doctor of your medical history and any current medical conditions when considering Scopolamine, particularly if you have heart, liver or kidney disease; glaucoma; bladder problems; difficulty urinating, enlarged prostate; or stomach obstructions. She may choose to place you on an alternative medication.

Overdose

If you suspect an overdose of Scopolamine, contact emergency-medical personnel immediately. Some signs of overdose include convulsions or seizures, dizziness, feeling lightheaded, agitation, hallucinations, excitability and coma. In some severe cases, taking too much of the drug can be fatal.
