Get Rust Off Silver Trays

Silver trays use to be a stable in the home of the wealthy. Nowadays silver trays are a luxury. But in home that still use of have silver trays, maintaining their luster is one of the housekeeping chores. Real sterling silver doesn't rust. It tarnishes. But any object that is silver plated is susceptible to rust. When the silver plating wears off or is scratched and is then exposed to moisture, rust develops. But there are ways to treat the rust stains on silver trays.


Instructions


1. Scrub off the rust. Apply mineral oil to the rust stains. Allow 10 to 30 minutes for oil to settle in. Then use a kitchen scrubbing pad to scrub off the rust. Repeat this process if necessary.


2. Apply white vinegar. Use a paper towel or a scrubbing pad to apply liberal amounts of white vinegar to the rust stains. Wait 5 to 10 minutes then scrub off the rust. Repeat process if necesary. Vinegar contains ascetic acid that help in removing rust stains.


3. Apply cream of tartar. Create a mixture of cream of tartar and hydrogen peroxide suggests the article "Create a Homemade Rust Remover" on the Edubook website. Use 1 part hydrogen peroxide and 2 parts cream of tartar. Apply a small amount of the paste to the rust stains on the tray. Allow the mixture to soak in for 10 to 30 minutes depending on the amount of rust. Then scrub off the cream of tartar using a scrubbing pad. Most, if not all, of the rust, should be gone. If not, repeat process. Wipe clean with a damp cloth.
